SIREN

SIREN

Slave to the Underworld

BLACK ORCHID * OPIUM * VENETIAN WATERS * SACRED INCENSE
(this fable intersects with all of LUX AETERNA)

Still as a Gargoyle

In a lurching fog,

Blush dusk rolling fast

Over the floating city

Marchesa Casati

Perched upon a precipice

Of marble and salt rock

Half woman, half glittering bird

Her jet wings rise

Broadening her silhouette

(Oh muse to Man Ray)

Scanning her reflection

In the acqua veneziano

Below

Her dilated Eyes,

Chiseled, cheetah brown obelisks

She Whispers

To the wild

Bucking horses

She whispers

To the jeweled leopards

… Unchained

(Sssh, she muses to Jean Cocteau)

Wind up birds – creak then sing

Albino blackbirds hover on

Two staccato ghost wings

Sailing in the summer wind

A boa’s tongue flickers

Lighting diamonds on her neck

Her long arms beckon

A lone gondolier

Dressed in powder and brocade

(Muse to Cecil Beaton)

Leading her fleet

They, in satin and raven winged masks

Ball gowns, peacocks and orchids black

Silently drifting,

Towards her narcotic masquerade

(Muse to Galliano)

Wind up birds – creak then sing

Albino blackbirds hover on

Staccato ghost wings

Sailing in the summer wind

Behind her a crumbling villa

Its great arched door

Exhales

A cloud of opium

Like the mouth of a centaur

Belching out incense and a forgotten man

(Muse to Kerouac)

A century now gone by

In memoriam,

Patchouli strewn on the water

Polaris observes from the night time sky

The hologram of her breath

Casting out the mundane world

from that eccrentic barrier called death

Marchesa Casati

Perched upon a precipice

Of marble and salt rock

Half woman, half glittering bird,

Her jet wings rise

Broadening her silhouette

Marchesa Luisa Casati

Muse to the unconscious

Slave to the underworld

Muse to Manifest Destiny
